Trani

Back to the souther Italy, back to my grandparents. 3 days of full immersion into the local traditions. Within this there is the amount of food eaten every day. I'm gordinho now...

Focaccia, spaghetti con le cozze, pasta al fume', cotolette fritte, salsiccia, torte. No way of avoid getting fat... It's normal down here. 40 degrees under the shadow with no chance to get out, to take any ice-cream.

The city of Turenum (Trani) appears for the first time in the Tabula Peutingeriana, a 13th century copy of an ancient Roman itinerary. The name, also spelled Tirenum, was that of the Greek hero Diomedes. Trani has an ancient respectable history, with his cathedral that leads the Ionic sea.

Trani has a fantastic harbour, old-style, with several fishing boats, small and not, that bring to the citizien a lot of different delicious kind of fish. Trani and its neighbourhood, not only care about fishing, but it produces an excellent wine, Moscato di Trani, figs, olive oil, almonds and grain. Ergo, with these delicious products, you cannot avoid to have a nice supper before sleeping...

Rome, Romulus and Remus

Romulus and Remus are the traditional founders of Rome, twin sons of the Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia, fathered by the god of war, Mars. According to the tradition Romulus served as the first King of Rome. We did not see Romulus as we did not see Leonardo in Florence, but here we are: the capital of Italy.

This is one of the best city in the world, historically and turistically speaking. In 3 days we walked more than we did in the last 2 weeks. But we are never tired and when you find such good old architectural things around, you are really motivated to go onwards. The Colosseum underlines the huge Roman emperor along with its Arch of Constantine perfectly conserved. Castel Sant'Angelo, the Pantheom are other important symbols of the ancient Rome.

The main squares such as Piazza di Trevi with its popular fountain, Piazza di Spagna are tangible Neoclassicism things that worth a visit. It's too hot and sometimes, even if we are gladiators, we need to stop and drink something.

Rome was a major world centre of the Renaissance, second only to Florence. The most impressive masterpiece of Renaissance architecture in Rome is the Piazza del Campidoglio by Michelangelo. During this period, the great aristocratic families of Rome used to build opulent dwellings as the Palazzo del Quirinale and the Palazzo Farnese, now used by politicians.

Going out of Rome, or better staying inside, we visited the Basilica S. Pietro, symbol of the Vatican city, the smallest country over the world. I can go ahead forever, as there are 1000 things or more to see in Rome... but I think people can figure the importance of Rome out, just coming here and walk....

Firenze

Treno e via, eccoci a Firenze. From Venice straight to meet Leonardo da Vinci. We did not find him, but we have found a beautiful city. Ponte vecchio, our night spot before going to sleep. There was a man, in the middle of the bridge, singing italian and not italian songs. A lot of people just enjoying it, listening to him and singing. The background was composed by a pretty cool sunset, the Palazzo degli Uffizi and the river Arno. Amazing view from up here.

Florence is popular for its history, its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the maximum exponent of this era. A centre of medieval European trade and finance, the city is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. There is a small market right in the old city center, with a bronze wild boar: it is said that touching its nose it brings luck.

Walk down to the Duomo, then towards Santa Maria Novella, the Baptistry and the old San Lorenzo church. Palazzo Pitti just in front of our hostel, Palazzo Vecchio in the old city center and back home through Ponte delle Grazie... A locker on the bridge to lock the moment...

Venezia

Caramba che maschera. Caramba what a beautiful city. It is italian, I just want to underline... Venice, historically was an independent nation and it has been known with several nicknames such as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light".

Come si fa a costruire una citta' sulle palafitte sapendo che prima o poi il mare si sarebbe preso tutto?

I veneziani sono sempre stati creativi, motivati e testardi. Ma fino ad'ora hanno avuto ragione. I hope the land of Venice will stay where it is for long time.

As always we start walking, undeterminedly, towards something. Here everything is beautiful and it is worth a visit. Rialto bridge, something spectacular, P.za San Marco, this time without water, Ponte dei Sospiri, Grand Canal. I can go onwards forever...

Always with a bottle of water/gatorade/the'/powerend in hand, sun glasses and shining smiles, we enjoy the time down here. Another word from the gray Ireland. We coldn't take a picture with pigeons at P.za San Marco because manservants of bars around are not allowed to give free breadcrumbs to tourists.. what a pity.. Similarly, no trip on Gondola: a flight 2 ways to Dublin is cheaper. We did not meet Marco Polo either but we eat amazing ice creams.

Nice which is nice - France

After the quick break in Montecarlo, we headed towards Nice, the nice city in the Côte d'Azur. This time we just changed the form of transport: we took my car. Here we go: promenades des Anglais to get a tan. I thought the path to get here from nother Italy was shorter, but it doesn't matter: after the warmer weather we need a swim.

It's the third time in Nice, and everytime some building or some piece of road is succesfully built, clear sign of the growing level of the city. Plenty of people, plenty of bars and shops. Nice was nice, and with a brasilian girl, who has been buying fridges magnetic for months, who has been stopping to see every single shop for months, and cannot stand the high temperature, there is no way of not enjoying it :)

Montecarlo - Monaco

It was supposed to go straight to Nice, but why don't spend something in Monaco, in Montecarlo. Here we go. We can just afford a pizza which is even expensive and a bottle of coke. Nothing else in this 5-stars city/nation.
Fortunately we don't need to pay to see buildings, to walk around and to smile...

Plenty of beautiful expensive car, properly parked in front of the main Casino and Cafe' de Paris, just to attract tourists. We went inside the Cafe' de Paris, but for the first time I did not play anything....

Berlin

We are in Berlin. Do you think we came here straight from Frankfurt? No of course. We missed Dublin and its Temple Bar, so for 3 days we slept there :). But we cannot stay in the same place for more than a couple of days, so here we are, the capital of Germany.

You are leaving the American Sector.

Just one of the sign remembering the division of the city of Berlin during the second World War. Here it is full of these signs: from the open museum of Terror to the rest of the Berlin Wall, from the memorial square to the Brandenburg Gate.

We did not miss anything, corner after corner. There was a picture in the musem of Terror which speaks alone... We cannot do anything now, but we can remember and learn something. Berlin, even if has a respectable history, is a quite new city, grown esponentially up after the big 2nd War.

It's a organized city which does not forget the past. Unfortunately, I will remember this city even because I was forced to go to the hospital for a skin infection caused by something that maybe I will never know. Maybe It's a clear sign... Anyway, our Berlin Ball is full of fridges magnetics :)

Frankfurt

Here we go. We are in Frankfurt, the capital of the Euro currency. This means yesterday we arrived to Wroklaw, we slept, and we took this morning the flight to Germany. My luggage was still at the reception waiting for me. But today is another day and we are here in Frankfurt. Some days ago we received an email from the hostel just reminding us that our accomodation was situated in the red light discrict... What can we do now? Anything of course. Anyway, a part of this, the hostel was pretty good, confortable and clean.

As always, we started with breakfast and we have been walking since that moment. Here, at the downtown Frankfurt am Main there is a Marathon that concludes his 40 km in the center, the main hall, the Römerberg. We enjoyed seeing people arriving there after 12/13 hours. Maybe the next trip will be a marathon somewhere in the world...maybe NY...

Back to hostel after a nice supper with Gnocchi al ragu'... a snooker session while watching a movie and then dreaming...

Prague

I don't believe we are here. I don't believe we are in Prague. We booked the flight from Poland to Germany, and It was not supposed to come here. Anyway, supposed or not, we are in Prague, after Gabriela's persuading process started in Poland. It's the third time I have been coming to the Check republic and everythime Its bridges, Its castle, Its square with the clock have a real ammiration from myself.

It's a sunny day like yesterday when we had a long walk around the old city center. We did not have a lot of time, so Gabriela went to the Castle and I stayed at hostel-home organizing the rest... :) It was supposed to have the train to go back to Wroclaw, where we had the flight to Frankfurt, at 17:30. So with calm, the last lunch here, a small walk and finally we reached the train station.
There is a big queue, and we have less than 30 minutes to get the train. We went straight to the customer office where, in a kind way, the employer sayd us there is no train to get back to Poland. It's impossible as we have the ticket.

Gaby what's going on?
What time is the train?

After 5 fire minutes, we figured out the train was 15:30 instead of 17:30 and the next one was just the day after, too late to get the flight from Wroclaw to Frankfurt.
What we are gonna do Ga? Let's find a bus station?

After 30 minutes walking under 30 degrees we got there and we went straight to the bus agency where, again, a female employer said there was a bus at 19.
Ok, we are on Gaby, let's buy the ticket. Wait a second, the employer said: there is a bus, but It's full!

Gabriela started to make a fuss, to cry, to court the girl. There was no way she could reservate a place for us since the computer did not allow her to book, as the bus was full. We decided to wait for the bus and to kindly ask the driver a special favour.

19 arrived punctual like the bus, but unfortunately the drivers did not speak any English. A polish/check girl helped us during the communication, trying to get on, but the driver didn'n let us to get on without tickets.

Go to the agency and buy one ticket saying the bus It's half empty and there is a place for both of you!

The driver was right, so I went to the previous agency which, now was closed. I came back to the bus, and again, the driver said to buy a ticket to another desk. I went to the new desk, but a Russian couple was taking too long to buy their tickets. I was in the queue, waiting for my turn. The bus was going, Gabriela was crying outside. I asked an American guy to keep my place in the queue then i went to Gabriela but the driver was not there. I went again to the old queue, where i found the driver looking for me. He took me in front of the desk and he asked the employer to give to me a ticket. The employer, this time a male, said it wasn't impossible as the bus was supposed to be full, and the system couldn't print tickets anymore.

Finally, all wet, me due to the sweat, Gaby due to the tears, we were on, without paying our tickets. When we arrived to the Polish border, the bus stopped to a highway stop and the drivers asked us the money. This was monkey business, but we didn't care as finally we were going back to Wroclaw where I left my luggage and where tomorrow we have a flight to Germany. Such a lively trip....

Wrocław

Here we go, from Belgium to Poland, from Bruxelles to Wrocław . Thanks Mr. Ryan for the cheap flights. We are going down, latitudinally speaking and the more we go the more we suffer the hot weather.

The first thing we discover once landed in this country is the cost of the life, absolutely cheap, even for a brasilian girl :) The hostel is waiting for us and when you figure out that in your dormitory there is nobody expect you, a smile is inevitable. Wrocław is the main city of the Lower Silesia region that offers an amazing Town square in Brick Gothic style. The St. Elisabeth's Church dominates the town hall which with his fountains offers a cooling way of refrigerating.

A beer of course while walking, here we are not in Dublin, hence we can drink whatever we want wherever we want. A culinary lunch in a self-service and again legs on shoulders towards the old university and the river.

Luca, I want to go to Prague. Gaby, It's far and in 2 days we have the flight to Germany. Gaby, It's also expensive. Luuu, I don't care!
