World Trip DAY 5/6/7 - Campos do Jordão - 9/10/11th february 2010

Eccomi sbarcato a Campos do Jordão, una caratteristica cittadina nello stato di Sao Paolo ai piedi del monte Mantiqueira. Il paesino brasiliano assomiglia di piu' a una cittadina europea, infatti le strutture sono stile tedesco, svizzero e italiano. I brasiliani vengono qui di inverno a sciare e a godersi la rara neve. Pero' adesso è estate e io mi godo i soavi 27 gradi in pieno relax.

Leva alle 10, cafè da manhana, e passeggiata in solitario nel monastero benedettino Sao Joao, un posto dove anche gli insetti si riposano. Pace, tranquillità. Si prosegue sul monte dove incrocio una favela, ma non pericolosa come quelle di rio o sao paulo e giu' di nuovo verso il centro.

Cena in una past-elleria, ergo un negozio dove vendono diversi tipi di pasteo (una sorta di fritttella) con carne, formaggio e chi piu' ne ha piu' ne metta. Mi sembra di essere nel sud italia a livello culinario.

Il tempo passa senza che me ne accorga, e siamo già al terzo giorno. Ho il bus per Sao Paulo nel pomeriggio e io mi godo questo pesce fresco nel mercato della città...

World Trip DAY 4 - Sao Paulo - 8th february 2010

A relax day. Just a quick walk in the center where the metro-life and the warm weather, with an average of 35 degrees, does not allow us to go further. If you take the metro in the rush-time you need to respect the queue even to pass the ticket-barrier.

Then walk either up or down through the stairs, always following a huge queue, and wait for your turn to finally enter the train, but just after another queue in the appropriate numbered sector by the rails...

World Trip DAY 2/3 - Santos - 6/7th february 2010

Santos, cittadina sul mare nello stato di Sao Paulo. Il processo di vertica lizzazione della popolazione non ha risparmiato la città che negli anni '80 ha visto una crescita esponenziale di grattaciali lungo il litorale incrementando il turismo sulle spiaggie.

Due giorni di relax, con colazione a base di papaia, mango, cocktail espanhola, formaggio, pranzo a base di pao de cheigo, caipirinha, cocco, e cena a base di pao de carninha, gelato. Un po' di crema sulla schiena prima che la mia pelle bianca irlandese si trasformi in pelle nera brasiliana, o meglio carne da brace. Una media di 27 gradi, 1 cocco ogni 12 ore, 1 bottiglia di acqua ogni ora. Relax sulla spiaggia, dove non mi accorgo di aver dormito per ore a causa del viaggio e delle due ore di fuso orario.

Catapultato dal freddo al caldo, dall'inverno all'estate, dal riso col curry alla caipirinha e carne gustosa, dagli amici irlandesi a quelli brasiliani.. la mia vacanza inizia :)

World Trip DAY 1 - Sao Paulo - 5th february 2010

Here we go. The British airways brought me to Sao Paulo, the crowed city over Brazil. After 12 hours sat on the same place, my ass is finally standing :) The impact is quite impressive: 35 degrees at 7 am. Here it is summer, and I'm not going to waste any ray of sun.

My Brazilian contacts kindly transported me from the airport to their home where i finally realized to be in the country of caipirinha, carnival, sun and mulattas. :) As some of you knows, i don't like wasting time, and that's why we went straight to the city center, by metro/car/bus/train... just kidding. But Sao Paulo is a big city, with a population of 15 million people or more, so they need space to live, i.e. the city is very extended.

First destination: Corinthias' sport center, where Ronaldo 'el gordo' and company were training for a weekly match.
'Lunchinho' in a shopping center where you can see all the thousands of employees running up and down, in their break time, grabbing a quick sandwich. Afternoon worths a visit to the main station, some street and then back home, waiting for Gabrielinha.

Yet, as I'm an active person, and as i need to get used of this 100km-speed-brasilian life, with Thales, Naiana, Gaby, my Paulista-celtics mates, we are going to Santos, a city by the sea looking for sun, fun and relax...

What the hell is this? Giogio? Do you know it? Anyway, first of February, first post from the land of celtic and last of february from this place. Yes, i will be travelling around our lovely world from thursday so if i will be able to write some scrap from some remote village in Vietnam or Cambodia, or if I won't be stolen in favelas in Brasil, or yet, I will have a chance to find an internet-spot in Tasmania, i will definitely write here.

An hard month, this, the first of 2010. Students to follow, assigning them "homeworks", 2 workshop accepted and the related web-site to build. 3 papers submitted around and some poker-session enhanced... :) I guess i won't be able to do better...

E' dall'anno scorso che non scrivo su questo sito. Diverse settimane sono trascorse.
Il natale e' arrivato, consumato e passato. Sono stato buono? Sono stato cattivo? In ogni caso papa' Trinity mi ha fatto un grosso regalo: un giro del mondo in 64 giorni :) Io ringrazio senza battere ciglio.

Gia', passero' questo freddo inverno nell'altro emisfero, passando dal brasile, con il suo bel carnevale, argentina, australia on the road, da sidney a melbourne, indonesia e la sua bella Java, thailandia e Vitnam prima di rincasare subito dopo pasqua nella dublino che sara' in piena privamera :) Grazie TCD.

Cosi anche il capo d'anno e' arrivato, consumato, passato e siamo giunti al 2010. Un nuovo decennio, che sara' ricco di cambiamenti, sorprese belle e brutte.

E infine la benafa che tutte le feste porta via. Il jucas contro tutti non e' andato al meglio, il che significa, stando alla teoria precedente, l'anno nuovo ha portato sorprese brutte. Dunque essendo solo a gennaio mi rimangono parecchie cose belle e una cosa brutta in meno.... :)

Skopje - Rep. Of Macedonia

Levataccia questa mattina alle 5.30, sotto il cielo e la nebbia grigia di Skopje. Due giorni nella capitale FYROM all'insegna del divertimento. La citta' non e' turisticamente appetibile. Due statue femminili fanno festa in centro, ma indossano vestiti estivi, nonostante i 2 gradi che ci sono.

Skopje e' una citta' piuttosto grigia, che sta crescendo rapidamente dal dopoguerra. Questa crescita venne interrotta nel 1963, quando fu colpita da un disastroso terremoto che ha scosso fortemente la citta' e i suoi abitanti.

Passiamo le due giornate avanti e indietro per locali, club, supermercati e centri commerciali. Un caffe', un cappuccino, patatite fritte, un altro caffe', e poi una cena a base di risotto ai funghi. Niente di particolare, ma con le persone giuste ci ri riesce sempre a divertire. Thanks mates.

Ohrid - 2nd round

Ancora ad Ohrid. La temperatura e' un po' diminuita, ma io sopravvivo ancora con la mia giacca autunnale. Mi devo preparare perche' a quanto pare 2/3 pubs mi aspettano. Capatina in citta', per una passeggiata sul lungo lago... la gente non e' tanta, quella che c'e' sembra godersi la citta', in tutto relax. I ritmi sono piu' attenuati qui, non c'e' rumore, le montagne attorno fanno da scudo.

La nebbia inizia a calarsi sullo specchio della citta' e noi ci rifugiamo nel primo pub. Oltre ai soliti cocktail un secondo piatto inaugura la serata. Due chiacchere con gente del posto, Dusica and company sono sempre ospitali. Non c'e' fretta, non c'e' tensione, una chiamata via telefonino/internet all'amico camerunense che ci riconosce subito.

Ci si scambia sorrisi, il tavolo continua a riempirsi di bicchieri vuoti... e ancora i sorrisi si allargano... ci si sposta nel secondo pub... e poi club. E' solo l'inizio. Qui si puo' fumare nei locali, i vestiti sono impregnati di fumo.. ma questo non ferma il divertimento....

Skopie - Orhid

Eccomi sbarcato a Orhid, passando da Skopjie, la capitale della Repubblica di Macedonia. 5 ore da Thessaloniki e poi altre 3 ore di bus. Arrivo ad Ohrid, Italia anni '80. Costruzioni, casermoni come condomini, poca gente ma un taxi mi attende...
Inizia la mia avventura ad Ohrid... Io con la mia giacca autunnale, stile autunno Dublino, e qui fa freschino...

Arriviamo in pochi istanti nella cittadina storica, dove sostero' per qualche giorno. Il ciottolano per terra fa di questo un posto suggestivo, ai piedi del lago che porta lo stesso nome della citta'. Una macchina azzurra d'epoca sosta davanti alla porta sotto un sole incerto e dei gatti si rilassano ascoltando il venticello che soffia sul lago piatto...

Una vista mozzafiato da quassu'. Anche qui sono ortodossi e fra le montagne rocciose una chiesa domina il lago. Di fronte c'e' l'Albania e gli abitanti di questa perla si lamentano per i rifiuti che scaricano nelle acque di questo patrimonio dell'Unesco. Lascio giu' le valigie e subito vengo teletrasportato in un pub del centro. Uno, due e anche tre jagermeister. Offrono loro, offro io. Qui un cocktail del genere viene a costare 200 centesimi di euro e questo dovrebbe essere abbastanza per avere un paragone sul costo della vita quassu', anzi quaggiu... anzi..

Thessaloniki - the day after

The last day in this city, big, small, quite, crowd... everything...
The weather is pretty nice, and i can walk just with a shirt on the coast. I've got the White Tower and i stop a while for a quick nap and some shots with my inseparable 5-years old 4megapixel camera which still works properly...

A lunch at pizza hut, with a dish of "amatriciana"... and of course a beer. The sun is still shining, so back on the road towards the Arch of Galerius (Kamara) and the Egnatia Avenue, passing from the Holy church of Nea Megali Panagia.

People here hold in hands a necklace with the cross, everywhere, while walking. They are orthodox and this is a form of protection while performing various activity within the day. I don't hold anything, but the destiny is with me towards the Republic of Macedonia...

Finally, Thessaloniki, Macedonia region, which apparently is the right name for Greece.

After a terrific smile, she issued a ticket to F.Y.R.O.M. which is my next stop in 2 days.
But here I am, Thessaloniki. The first impression wasnt that good, but i guess was the fault of the area surrounding the train station. Hostel as always and straight to town, where the landscape is quite different. A sunny day welcomes me, and I take advantage of it walking and listening to the music with my new iphone :)
A "set" of pigeons are flying in the square looking for crumbs of bread....

5 hours trip to Thessaloniki, up to the north. 5 hours thinking about kebabs. How good are these kebabs? how good are these Greek kebabs. Cheaps and good... I wanna live here :) 5 hours towards norther Greece.

Acropoli and Ancient Agora

Eccomi quassu', finalmente io ci sono arrivato. Si cammina, ma ne vale la pena. Da qui si vede tutta Atene, da qui si vede il futuro e il presente :) Da qui si immagina. L'acropoli e' anche conosciuta come Cecropia in onore del leggendario uomo-serpente Cecrope, il primo re ateniese.

Ci credo che e' un bene protetto dall'Unesco. Da qui la mente lavora meglio, e vogliono preservare questo... All'inizio, si parte dall'antica Agora', dove c'e' il viale dei filosofi, un tempo la strada prediletta dai filosofi per confrontarsi su varie idee e parlare dell'immenso... Il tempio di apollo, dove una tartaruga pensa al passato... Si cammina verso l'alto, passando dal Teatro di Dionisio, arrivando al Partenone e all'antico tempio di Atena.

La vista da qui e' genuina consigliata a tutti, inutile descriverla e raccontarla. Questo spazio era il cuore dell'antica Grecia, e tutta l'attuale Europa, e dunque mi chiedo come queste persone possano aver cotruisto tutto questo... Sembra che la popolazione greca sia riversata tutta ai piedi di questa collina....

Athens - Greece

Sbarcato ad Atene, dopo lo stop tecnico a Londra. Temperatura decisamente migliore rispetto alla terra grigia dei celtici. Dicono che sia anormale, ma a me piaciono questi 20 gradi puliti che mi permettono di andare in giro con una semplice t-shirt.

La prima impressione e' un po' cosi, strade sporche ed intasate di un po' di tutto. Non c'e' molta confusione, ma puoi trovare dal taxi, all'ambulante, dagli zingari ai turisti, dai ragazzini che giocano a palla ai vecchietti che giocano a carte. Suggestivo certamente, intrigante per certi punti di vista.

Poi cammini un po', arrivi a monastiraki square e la vista ti si apre. Dal basso puoi vedere l'acropoli che domina sulla collina tutta Atene, una meraviglia. Poco tempo oggi e domani, per via della conferenza, ma sicuramente fra poco lassu' io ci vado :)

Gdansk and neighbourhood

Up to Gdansk, at the top of Poland. From here i can see half Europe down. A beautiful city, with nice people, really nice. Weather not that good, but good enough for visiting lots of things. The center of this city is amazing, with colored houses, and a special river middle-age styled. Friends very nice, available and very generous. WESTERPLATTE where the second world war started... There is Neptune in the center of the Long Market watching everything out.

Poznań - polish life

The rynek under the rain. A spaghetti dish in a typical italian-polish restaurant :)... bah.... just in Stare Miasto.. Coloured houses one beside each other are the main attraction of the city. There is a wet free bench.. let's sit there waiting vaguely for a ray of sun.... tomorrow is Gdansk turn...

Poland is always amazing. Im not gonna say anything about the city as it's the second time i've been here, but i just recommend this to you guys.... let's go to Poland...

In the rynek there are a couple of good clubs to dance...unfortunately im alone so just a couple of pints before going back to the hostel.... bytheway .... right here there is plenty of statues and small sculputers everywhere ....

Good things in life have flown away from dublin. My brasilera, my brasilian flat-mate. 1 year all togheter, having a good time, always, poorly but funny and pure. Such nice people. Thanks guys, thanks Gabrielinha, thanks Thalesado, i spent a really good year with both of u. I learnt a lot of things, I hope i suggested something good as well. For sure I will meet you again...

Just prepare BBQ and cachaca 51 at samba rythm... :)
